The Review
Story: 7/10

While the story is sound, and actually has some strong emotional feelings throughout the entire piece, abstract is unfortunately not my type of story. If abstract was, however, I would rate the story an 8.5

Grammar: 8/10

The grammar was pleasant in most of the story, although a couple sentences felt ‘off’. However, I felt it could have been the writing style causing this (this isn’t necessarily a bad thing).

Overall: 8/10

I really liked Closed, even with it’s abstract format. My only qualms are the length (so short!) and the price. Right from the beginning I could feel the emotion coming out of the piece, and it was easy to visualize the scenes happening.

I feel that Closed would have been better in a collection, rather than as a stand alone piece. As a stand alone, I don’t think it warrants a price tag due entirely to its length. However, I would still recommend Closed to you if you like bite-sized readings of high-emotion abstract pieces.

My choices are ParaPara Paradise 2, 3, 6, or 7, Master Of ParaPara, We Love Techpara -Mission Style-, We Love TechPara, and then one of the Gazen ParaPara’s (I have no idea which one it is; I can’t read Japanese. It has my sweet banana, number one, and sex crime on it.)

I need help choosing which one to learn (although I hope everyone doesn’t want a techpara one; that’d be hard! XD) and of course, I’d love to have a partner to dance with, or multiple partners! Obviously a partner would need to live in New Mexico, either in Albuquerque, or near enough to be able to make regular practice, and then of course the convention itself. I can pay for your con ticket(s) if need-be. :3

I also want to learn a couple of the ‘popular’ dances going around right now. I want to do Caramelldansen (already know it), Love & Joy, Luka Luka Night Fever, and anything else you guys want to suggest!

HiNaBN, as the comic is frequently referred to, is a supernatural drama/comedy with Vampires, Zombies, Magic, and Werewolves all wrapped into a sugar-frosted package.

The Review
Story: 8/10

The story flows nicely for the most part, although sometimes it gets a little messy. The panel layouts in the beginning could be a touch confusing, but everything has become much more streamlined as the comic progresses.

Art: 8.5/10

It’s a hobby of mine to look for issues, so for the most part you should read this as a 9/9.5
I’ve enjoyed watching Tessa evolve as an artist while she has worked on HiNaBN, and the art shows great improvement in recent pages. Her unique style and colouring improvement has greatly benefited the atmosphere of the comic.

Characters: 8/10

The characters are nice and varied, and there is very little overlap in personalities. Character growth is minimal, with some exceptions, but most of the characters are already situated nicely where they belong so it isn’t much of a problem.

Overall: 9.5/10

Hanna is Not a Boy’s Name! is an interesting take on a supernatural world, with plenty of snarky and comedic moments, but isn’t without its heart-pulling moments either. It’s a great comic if you like less serious supernatural stories, or if you like a chick-lit style atmosphere tossed with teen literature style.

The Review

I’ve seen some of the elements before, but the package they wrapped it in is unique to me and makes it fresh.

Art: 8.5/10

I’m always picky about art and will always find something to nit-pick about, so unless you are intentionally staring at the art looking for flaws like I do, ignore my 8.5 and read it as a 9.5

Characters: 8/10

The characters are nicely designed and are fairly realistic in their personalities, however a couple of characters are rather similar to others I’ve seen in concept, but this is acceptable as the concept isn’t particularly unique, such as Countryman reminding me of Captain America. The Superhero alias’ are blunt and to the point, and while this could be seen as a flaw, I am rather refreshed by it as I’m still fond of the super simple and blunt hero names of past.

Overall: 9.5/10

I think the flow of Issue 1 is good and the story is easy to follow. There were a few points that left me wondering what had happened, but these were from a viewpoint that wouldn’t of had the knowledge at the time and were explained later. The ending was easily identifiable as the stopping point and I wasn’t left wondering where the next page was, but it also left me curious about the next bit of the story. If you enjoy superheroes, alternate universes, or young adult stories, I would recommend The Uniques to you. Issue 1 is free to read on the website, and hey, it’s only 40 pages including cover.
